Think of a website address. Any website address. Unless a government or nonprofit site came to mind, chances are, the domain extension is .com. In fact, 52% of all websites are .com extension domains.Especially if you’re going to be telling people what your website address is (as opposed to them finding you in search engine results), there are benefits to using the “default” domain extension .com simply for easy recall.
How do I choose between a .com, .org, or .net domain name?
The .org domain extension is most often associated with non-profit organizations. This means, if you choose this type of domain extension for your business, you may run into the issue of some visitors thinking you’re a non-profit organization.
These are a good option for tech companies since there is a subtle mental hook .net = internet or network. This is the second most popular extension and is widely accepted for businesses of all types.From the SEO end of things, .net is better than other extensions, but has lower google rankings weight than the matching .com and .org extensions.
Usually what we recommend is that if you are a UK business, and especially if you are a local business like a plumber, cleaning company, accountant, etc. that is operating in a local geographical area as opposed to an international business, then a .co.uk domain name is probably a more appropriate choice for you. It is telling your potential customers that you are a UK company basically. However if you want to be a global site for example an ecommerce website selling items online across multiple countries then the best option would be to choose a .com domain.
What your choice however if you want to take the .com domain name off the market to prevent someone else registering it then the solution is to register it & then set up what is called domain parking for the .com domain.
SEO, quite simply, involves designing your website to improve its ranking in organic search results on search engine results pages (SERPs). Optimizing for terms that your target audience will use to search, you will drive relevant traffic to your site that has a better conversion rate.
There is a countless amount of SEO factors which effect rankings however this is not bedtime reading so I won’t bore you to sleep. Here is 5 SEO basics that you can act on today…
1. Improve the speed of your website
The speed of a page plays an important role in determining your SEO ranking of a site on SERPS. Nobody wants to visit a site that takes ages to load a single web page, and search engines are mindful of that. Infact research has shown it takes as little as 2.5 seconds response time that users start dropping off a site. This is why people, and consequently the search engines, will ignore tedious, slow loading websites.
2. Start Blogging!
Before i met my girlfriend i thought blogging was just for people to share information, however she showed me that there is a purpose that all businesses can benefit from.
Blogging lets you cover topics that may be slightly outside of your target market however still remain relevant to your market, resulting in a wider range of keywords your site contains meaning a larger audience which otherwise you may never gain. This audience may never lead to making a sale however some may and having a larger audience coming to your website is never a bad thing.
If your site has a blog function use it and post regularly. If your site doesn’t have a blog function, its worth contacting the web developer of your website and asking if it is possible to get one installed. Search engines prioritise sites that it sees are regularly updated with fresh content.
3. Optimise Your Images
It’s important to optimise your images too. Pay attention to what image files on your site are named, and give them brief but descriptive names with words separated by dashes, such as “seo-factors.jpg” so they’re easily readable by search engines. Also look at the “alt text” of each image which although search engines can’t see images it can read them via the alt text.
A website’s loading speed is also one of the factors that Google uses to rank pages, and the smaller the file sizes of your images, the faster your site will load. Huge image files can drag the page-load time of your site down and directly affect your rankings on search engines, so be sure to resize them before you upload.
4. Mobile First
Up until recently, Google primarily viewed web pages through the eyes of a desktop user, treating mobile pages as important, but secondary to those desktop pages. With 80% of users now viewing websites on mobile devices a number which will continue to grow you can understand why a different approach is now being taken. Google is treating the mobile versions of each page as the primary page to index, with desktop versions being secondary.
What does Google count as mobile friendly? The simple definition is any webpage that views “correctly” on a mobile device. This includes:
- Content not sized to viewport
- Small font size
- Touch elements too close

5. Integrate web analytics
Once your SEO goals have been determined, you can search for the best software that can help you record the performances of your site and actions of your web visitors on your site on a regular basis.
There are plenty of reliable tools such as Google Analytics and Google Webmaster that can track your site’s search performance along with numerous testing tools if something goes wrong.
These are some of the great SEO tips that you must follow if you want to improve the SERP (search engine results page) ranking of your site and get some healthy organic traffic to your website.
SEO is all about getting visibility for your site and your organisation, but it’s just as important to impress people once they reach your site. If you have everything as optimised as it can be, but your site’s design and content doesn’t engage people once they turn up; it’s unlikely that you’ll see the benefit of your hard optimisation work. Search optimisation may bring people to your site, but it’s up to you to draw them in further once they’re there.
Apple’s latest release the iPhone X has a notch because a portion at the top of its screen has been given to the sensor housing. As a result, the illuminated surface of the phone no longer forms a rectangle; instead, a head with horns when held in a vertical orientation as seen on the image below.
As you can see, our content is being overlapped by the notch and coming uncomfortably close to the rounded corners.
Apple has confirmed that websites that choose not to remedy their site to best fit the iPhone X will see the “empty” or a insert area. This will now feature on each side of the web page when viewed horizontally to automatically.
Solution? A new CSS rule
We then move onto a new CSS function that Apple calls constant() and the CSS Working Group calls env(), and two other new CSS functions called min() and max() that Apple plans to support in a future Safari Technology Preview release. With these functions comes addition pre-defined contstants:four additional pre-defined constants: safe-area-inset-left, safe-area-inset-right, safe-area-inset-top, and safe-area-inset-bottom. The purpose of these constants is to define the size of the safe areas around a page.
As you can see in the image above a simple safe area of padding will produce a safe area to the left of the website which accounts for the housing. Web developers and Designers can use these safe areas to make sure that content won’t be obscured by the sensor housing, home indicator, or rounded corners.
It was confirmed that current websites layout will appear fine on the iPhone X from the start because content is automatically placed in a safe area safe from being obscured by the sensor housing.But to make full use of the screen up to and around the notch these CSS changes are suggested
These CSS changes are not technically challenging, and pretty simple for the normal website developer however it can prove to be significant work for more complex site layouts and bespoke animated designs.
